Bruce Cooper
Southern California & Mexico


Bruce has worked for Ullman Sails for over 26 years. Bruce began Southern California sailing at the age of 6 and has continued to sail locally and internationally.  His 35-years of experience racing ranges from one-design dinghies, small keelboats, 12 Meters and 70’ Sleds. Bruce has competitively raced in California, Europe, Key West, throughout Mexico and raced to Hawaii nine times. Bruce has won as crew at the National Championships in B-25’s, Catalina 38’s and won numerous PHRF Championships. Bruce is responsible for design, quality control and loft operations. Bruce purchased the Newport Beach & Long Beach Ullman Sails franchises from Dave Ullman in 2006. His sail making strengths are wide range; working in handwork, running the plotter, laying out repairs to designing. Bruce’s goal is to have the most satisfied customers. He likes to see customers meet their vision of sailing and/or racing on their dreamboat with the absolute best set of sails made by his loft. Bruce has been able to turn his passion for sailing into a lifelong career.

Dave Ullman
Southern California & The Universe


Dave founded Ullman Sails in 1968 and is one of the world’s greatest competitive sailors. Dave was named Rolex Yachtsman of the Year in 1996, was nominated again for 2007, and is a three-time 470 World Champion, the 2007 Melges 24 World Champion, a five-time Lipton Cup Champion (1992-1996), a ten-time Lido 14 National Champion, and a National Champion in the Snipe, Thistle, Sabot and Coronado 15 racing classes. Dave is also an S.O.R.C. class-winning skipper, a U.S. Team Racing Champion, a U.S. Men’s National Champion (Mallory Cup) and a former coach of the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. Dave’s responsibilities at the loft include sail design and fiber layout for Ullman Sails Fiber Path membrane sails. He also sails with and coaches customers through his business at Ullman Enterprises. Come meet Dave at the loft and meet his friendly dog “Penny”.

Erik Shampain
Southern California & Melges 24 Circuit


Erik came to work at Ullman Sails in 2006. Erik joined our team because of his knowledge in sailboat cruising and racing. His experience goes back to working, racing and managing many top race boats in Southern California. Erik’s responsibilities at the loft are managing production, managing one design sails, rigging, hardware and customer service. Erik enjoys racing sport boats like the Henderson 30, Flying Tiger and Melges 24.  Recently Eric was the winning crew of the Etchells Worlds and B-25 National Champion. Erik also excels in blue water cruising and offshore racing and has raced in dozens of Hawaii and Mexican races. His last two races to Hawaii were in the double-handed division on a J-100 and a 1D-35! Erik will 100% take care of your sail at the Ullman loft whether it is being made, repaired or just checked over.

Keith Magnussen

Southern California & Texas & Viper 640 Circuit

 

Keith started sailing in Southern California 18 years ago and has enjoyed racing on some of the best boats the area has to offer.  Keith grew up like most kids in California, racing Sabots and Flying Juniors.  He is now heavily involved with the Viper 640 fleet and puching towards the top in every regatta.  Recently completed the 2011 Transpac (2nd in class) and the San Diego-PV Race on the J-125 Timeshaver (2nd class 2nd overall.   He has won PHRF Championships with the classic boat “California Gold” and the Farr 40 Temptress.  He arrived at Ullman Sails Newport in June of 2010 and will be working in the Sales and Repair departments.  Keith is working with boat clubs, racers, cruisers and anyone else that might need services from Ullman.  He has a vast knowledge of racing and cruising and is looking forward to helping out with customers needs.  kmagnussen@ullmansails.com

 

Bryan Dair
Long Beach, California


Bryan is the manager of Ullman Sails Long Beach and services all of the Long Beach and Cabrillo marinas. Bryan is one of the most knowledgeable sailors you will ever meet. His sail making experience covers over 25 years. Bryan has extensive cruising and racing experience that helps him discuss the best options for strength and durability to meet your sail needs. When not working, Bryan enjoys racing Cal 20’s, racing with customers on their boats or racing double handed his Islander 30 MKII “Cool”. Bryan will make sure Ullman customers get the best value from their new sail and repair work.

Mike George

King Harbor-Marina del Rey, California


Mike joined Ullman Sails as a sail consultant over 15 years ago. Mike services Ullman customers in King Harbor and Marina del Rey. Mike has well-rounded knowledge of the sailing industry. Because of their love of sailing, Mike and his wife Denise resurrected and started production the popular Martin 242 boat. Additionally, Mike has raced the Olympic class Star, Martin 242’s, small keelboats and sleds. Mike recently added the Martin 242 North American Championship to his list of victories. Mike will make sure you are satisfied with your Ullman sail and service!

Ken Cooper
Newport Beach, California


Ken’s duties at Ullman Sails are plotter/cutting services, and cloth inventory. Ken previously worked in the sailing industry at two different sailcloth companies; he understands the best cloth makes the best sails. Ken’s sailing resume spans over 30 years of inshore and offshore racing. He has raced to Hawaii, throughout Mexico and all of the major regattas in Southern California. Ken is a true competitor having won three Schock 35 National Championships (’93, ’94,’95).

Jeff Lenhart
Newport Beach, California


Jeff is one of the original employees at Ullman Sails. His experience goes back to sailing and racing one-design dinghies since he was a junior sailor in Mission Bay, San Diego. He started winning national championships as a junior in the one design Sabot class in the 1960’s. Some of Jeff’s other big victories are in the one-design Snipe class that includes World’s, Nationals and Pan Am Games. His success as a one-design sailor has led to being a world-class sail maker for Ullman Sails. Jeff’s duties at the loft include cutting and layouts for the one-design championship sails for the Cal 20, Lido 14, Sabot, Lehaman 12, CFJ, IFJ, Snipe, Thistle and Coronado 15.  Jeff is an interregnal part of overseeing the one design sails made at our loft

 

 

John Papadopoulos

Newport Beach, California

John has been helping Ullman Sails and part of our team since 1998. John’s duties at Ullman Sails include computer and technical support and Lido 14 quality control. He has won the Lido 14 Nationals and supports and services the Lido 14 fleet via his sailing business “Doublewave”. John keeps Ullman Sails connected to the Internet world!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Pablo Gallyas

CHILE

Pablo brings a family approach to sailing and enjoying boats in Chile, South America. During spring and summer when the south 15 to 35 knots wind shows up you can see at Algarrobo Bay and central Chile lakes, kids in optimist, and many others in laser, lightning, J24, Melges 24, J105 to Soto 40 or bigger cruising boats sailing. Pablo is the owner of Gallyas Marine that started building wooden boats during the late 1970’s. His family built boats one design and small boats locally that includes Snipes, Lightnings, sabots, pirates, flying dutchmans and some cruisers. All ended when fiber plastic boats appeared. The new technique of building and material change the market.

In 2008, during Annapolis North American Melges 24 Championship, the Gallyas family met Dave Ullman and his team. 2011. Gallyas Marine has reborn to introduce high tech and cruising sails to the Chilean market power by Ullman Sails. Our primary goal is to provide a good service with responsibility to our customers making their boats sails faster and safe.

 

 

Robin Sodaro
Bay Area, Sausalito, Ca

Robin joined the Ullman Sails team in mid-2009. He and his wife Vicki run Sodaro Sailmakers, a full service loft, in Sausalito, California and represent Ullman Sails racing and one design sails to Bay area sailors and racers. Robin is a master sail maker and has a world of knowledge for local and blue water cruising sails and systems, as well as racing design and tips for speed! Robin’s experience with the tough winds and conditions in san Francisco Bay is a big plus for making the right sail cloth choices and hardware choices for your next sail. Phoenix and greater Arizona

 

Bruce is involved with small boat sailing and has years of experience with boating, yacht club involvement and having fun! Bruce just joined the Ullman Sails team and will help sailors in the lake districts of Arizona and the marinas with their on the water needs. Ullman Sails and Bruce will help the local sailors with repairs, new sails and seminars to keep all the sailors informed of the newest sail handling, sail trimming and sail cloth updates.
